Why strength & conditioning rather than cardio?

While we have a small number of cardio machines, our main focus is strength and conditioning. Both cardio and weights can make you healthier and fitter, there are more overall benefits from strength training for your health and longevity:

Strength training builds muscle which in the long term will help you burn more calories. Cardio-heavy workouts can actually reduce muscle due to the stress hormones produced during intensive workouts.

Strength training is best for weight loss. While a cardio workout can burn more calories at the time, you will continue to burn calories after a strength training workout for as long as 38 hours! Strength training is therefore overall best for fat loss as the more muscle you develop, the more calories you burn at rest.

Strength training will increase muscle tone and strength, improve your co-ordination and help prevent injury. Building muscle will help rehabilitate from injury. Developing muscle also helps with body composition, creating shape and tone and a positive body image.

Muscle loss happens from age 30 onwards unless we do something to prevent it and losing muscle is one of the biggest accelerators of rapid aging. When we lose muscle we become more insulin resistant, have slower metabolism, higher cortisol (stress hormone), lower growth hormone (the hormone that repairs, renews and rebuilds our tissues|) so therefore higher inflammation. Testosterone lowers with muscle loss (in men and women) leading to further muscle loss, low libido, inflammation, depression, lower energy levels.

Strength training builds mitochondria (our bodies tiny energy producing machines) which provides us with more energy and prevents aging. It also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and lowers the risk of heart disease.

Strength training improves our mental health by reducing cortisol levels (our stress hormones) and causing the release of mood boosting neuro transmitters including endorphins, endocannabinoids and dopamine (our feel-good hormones) thereby improving mood and motivation.

Strength training increases our cognitive function BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) is produced during strength training and is like miracle grow for the brain, improving our cognitive function (making us smarter!) and preventing decline. By promoting neuroplasticity (our brains ability to learn and adapt) and increase oxygen to the brain – exercise protects us from degenerative diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Strength training prevents age related loss of mobility, balance and stamina. Strengthening muscle protects arthritic and damaged joints. It can also help prevent loss of function in degenerative and neurological conditions.
